The Sheffield Project was an artist commissioning programme run by Untitled Gallery (now known as Site Gallery) from 1987 to 1991. Emerging photographers were recruited locally and nationally to observe and record the changes taking place in Sheffield at the
time.
In 2020 Weston Park Museum held an exhibition featuring
photographs from The Sheffield Project, alongside works from
other exhibitions curated by Untitled Gallery in the 1980s. They
explored the most significant period of environmental and
economic change in the city’s history since the Industrial
Revolution.
This display shows a small selection of the works that were
donated to Sheffield’s collection following the 2020 exhibition.
Copies of the photographs were taken to a session at Crosspool
Memory Café, along with some maps of Sheffield city centre
from the 1980s and ‘90s. They were used to prompt memories
and share stories about Sheffield, and how it has changed. Some
quotes from those conversations have been included here.
With thanks to Matthew Conduit and all the artists who contributed to The Sheffield Project and to the members and volunteers of Crosspool Memory Café
