Off the Shelf Festival: Trailblazer: The First Feminist to Change Our World - Jane Robinson

Fri 11 October 2024 , 12:30pm-1:30pm

Millennium Gallery

You may not have heard of Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon, but look at the history of social change in Victorian Britain and you’ll find her.

This illustrated talk by historian Jane Robinson celebrates the life of the founder of the first university college for women, the first women’s suffrage society and the campaign to allow women to keep their own property after marriage. She was Florence Nightingale’s secret cousin, George Eliot’s best friend and one of Victorian England's finest female painters.

This event is part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words from the University of Sheffield. The full festival programme is available here: https://offtheshelf.org.uk/events/
