Off the Shelf Festival: Backbone of the Nation - Robert Gildea and Panel

Sun 13 October 2024 , 3pm-4pm

Millennium Gallery

In this powerful history of the Miners’ Strike of 1984-85, Robert Gildea interviewed miners and their families, including those in Yorkshire, uncovering stories of survival, solidarity and redemption and recording the triumphs, losses, and resilience of these mining communities.

At this event, marking the 40th anniversary of the strike, Robert will be joined by ex-miner Paul Winter, miner’s wife Betty Cook and Orgreave Truth and Justice campaigner Kate Flannery to discuss this epoch defining event in Britain’s social history.

This event is part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words from the University of Sheffield. The full festival programme is available here: https://offtheshelf.org.uk/events/

The event is organised by the Off the Shelf Festival. Views expressed at this event do not reflect those of Sheffield Museums.
