Lunchtime Talk: Penny McCarthy: How to Look Through Time

Thu 6 November 2025 , 1pm-1:45pm

Graves Gallery

Join artist Penny McCarthy for this special opportunity to find out about her work, process, and inspiration, and hear about her latest exhibition, How to Look Through Time.

Through her thoughtful, often delicate works, McCarthy invites the viewer to consider how time affects the way we view and understand art. For How to Look Through Time, she presents a new series of work that uses a 16th century Titian print to examine the role historic artwork can have in our lives today.

Penny McCarthy is an artist and academic with a particular interest in the materiality and experience of drawing. Central to her work is an interest in understanding phenomena through detail, exacting slowness and concentrated observation.

Her research is presented internationally in a variety of contexts: in exhibitions, conferences, and as live projects and publications. She has earned awards from the Evelyn Williams Drawing Prize, Henry Moore Foundation, Wellcome Trust, Arts Council England and AHRC. Recent projects include Liquid Crystal Display (Site Gallery & MIMA), Picture Room (NY). Beware the Cat, a research collaboration toured theatres including RSC Stratford (2019).
