Lunchtime Talk: John Berger and the Miners' Strike

Tue 2 July 2024 , 1pm-1:45pm

Weston Park Museum

Join editors Tom Overton and Matthew Harle as they talk about The Underground Sea, a new book celebrating John Berger’s acclaimed writing.

The Underground Sea celebrates both Berger’s acclaimed writing and his deep-rooted politics. This succinct collection of writing from John Berger’s archive brings together for the first time his work on mineworkers and the miners’ strikes. His essay ‘Miners’, places itself in the heart of a Derbyshire mining village, with reflections on the everyday life of a typical pit community. Berger grapples with the politics of witness as he studies the miners’ labour and the wider community shaped in service to this work.

With the 40th anniversary of the Miners’ Strikes this year, join editors Tom Overton, Berger’s biographer, and Matthew Harle, a writer and curator at the Warburg Institute, as they share their take on Berger’s writing and give context on the strikes as a set of actions for today.
