To mark the 150th anniversary of Weston Park Museum, this display highlights some of the objects that formed the basis of Sheffield’s collections, many of which were on display when the museum opened in September 1875.
It includes the first object accessioned into the collection; a specimen of Platypus which was given the museum number A1, many other items donated by Sheffield Literary and Philosophical Society, who’s gift made Sheffield’s first public museum possible and a slideshow of photographs of the museum over the last 150 years.
Henry Seebohm was a steel manufacturer and a highly influential Victorian ornithologist. He’s still very well regarded but often overlooked in his home city of Sheffield. 150 years ago this year, he was one of the first people to travel to Siberia to study its birdlife. His findings helped to establish that many species of birds fly South in the winter.
He amassed an enormous collection, some of which he donated to the newly opened Weston Park Museum. This small display of some of his specimens, including some collected in Siberia, commemorates the anniversary of his arctic exploration.
