Weston Park Museum gallery renamed to celebrate former Chair and city business leader

Weston Park Museum’s Sheffield landscapes gallery debuted a new name in March in memory of Sheffield businessman and former chair of the museums’ Board of Trustees, Gordon Bridge OBE.

The Picturing Sheffield displays in the Gordon Bridge Gallery are home to artists views of the city spanning 250 years, including the Stanley Royle cityscapes that Gordon was so fond of.

Gordon Bridge (1944-2022) was a respected businessman and a devoted ambassador for South Yorkshire’s manufacturing industries. Born in Birley Carr and educated at King Edward VII school, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant before going on to work for Tempered Spring, Richardson Sheffield Ltd. He later joined the global AESSEAL Group, a world-leading multinational organisation.

In 2007, Gordon was elected as Master Cutler of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. While in the role he launched the Master Cutler’s Challenge, which encouraged team building along with raising money for charity. The Challenge continues to raise many thousands of pounds each year.

During his lifetime Gordon supported a wide range of organisations and charities in a voluntary capacity.

These included the Confederation of British Industry, the University of Sheffield, the Sheffield Training and Enterprise Council and the J G Graves Charitable Trust as well as local schools such as Sheffield Park and Springs Academies. In 2010, he joined the Board of Trustees of our legacy trust, Museums Sheffield, and became its chairman from 2012 – 2014.

His love of museums and his infectious belief in great art for everyone inspired us all. In July 2009, Gordon was awarded an Honorary Degree by the University of Sheffield, followed by the Order of the British Empire for his services to the people of South Yorkshire in 2020. Gordon’s passion for the city and its people, his integrity, generosity and huge commitment to Sheffield means that he is remembered as a friend and colleague far and wide.

The Gordon Bridge Gallery is sponsored by AESSEAL plc.
