Art can be found across all of Sheffield’s collections, reflecting people, places, nature, emotions and ideas. These artworks date from the 16th century to the present day and encompass paintings, watercolours, prints, drawings, photographs, sculpture and film.
Sheffield’s collections include 6,000 items of visual art which show the development of British and European art. The foundations of this collection are bequests by two key patrons, Sheffield businessmen John Newton Mappin (1800-1883) and John George Graves (1865-1945), who believed that Sheffield was worthy of a nationally important art collection.
A particular strength of Sheffield’s visual art collection is the city’s holdings of 20th century and contemporary art. One of the most significant groupings is Modern British art, which comprises works by artists including Frank Auerbach, Vanessa Bell, David Bomberg, Gwen John and Stanley Spencer. Another highlight of the collection is work by artists associated with the BLK Art Group, such as Eddie Chambers, Claudette Johnson, Keith Piper, Donald Rodney and Marlene Smith. Significant contemporary acquisitions include Hew Locke’s Kingdom of the Blind #4 and #8, Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Self-Portrait Suspended VII, Grayson Perry’s Comfort Blanket and Lubna Chowdhary’s Certain Times LII.
