Lunchtime Talk: The Art and Craft of Broom and Brush Making

Wed 23 September 2026 , 1pm-1:45pm

Kelham Island Museum

Join Sheffield-based broom and brush maker, Rosa Harradine for a talk and live demonstration exploring the heritage craft of broom and brush making.

Working from her studio at Yorkshire Artspace's Persistence Works, Rosa creates functional objects by hand using natural materials and traditional techniques. In this illustrated talk, she’ll discuss the history of broom and brush making, the materials used in her work, and how historic craft skills can be adapted for a contemporary audience.

Alongside the talk, Rosa will demonstrate some of the techniques used to make her distinctive brushes and brooms, offering a rare opportunity to see this craft in action. From selecting materials to the tools and processes involved, Rosa will provide insight into a trade that has played an important role in everyday life for centuries.
