The Black Ladies Group

Tue 20 June - Wed 1 November 2023

Weston Park Museum

The Black Ladies’ Group has worked with Sheffield’s Roots and Futures partnership on an oral history project so their stories can be passed down to future generations.

This display showed the project photographs with transcriptions from the oral histories. Also included were items belonging to members of the Group that bring back memories of life in Jamaica, settling in Sheffield, and later visits to the Caribbean by them and their families.

“We come together from the Victoria Methodist Church when Sonia and Judith, the community worker there, talked to Cynthia about getting the Black Ladies together, and we formed a Black Ladies’ Group and a Black Men’s Group based at the same place. This has been going on since about 1985-1986. This was the first ladies’ group in the area."
