Off the Shelf: Plants Can Save Your Life – Ross Cameron

Tue 20 October 2026 , 12:30pm-1:30pm

Millennium Gallery

Growing plants and creating gardens is deeply rewarding but has also been proven to be vital for our health. Gardening reduces anxiety and stress, can delay the onset of dementia,  and improves physical health.

Ross Cameron, Professor of Environmental Horticulture at the School of Architecture and Landscape, University of Sheffield and advisor to the Royal Horticultural Society, has created an inspirational book. Published in collaboration with the RHS and newly revised it provides 50 ideas for planting and growing that can benefit our health. The book demonstrates how the natural world provides a long lasting and positive impact on our well-being. And gives a strong case for having more plants in our cities and our lives.

Professor Ross Cameron carries out research on how plants impact our health and well-being, but also how they provide additional services such as flood management, thermal regulation, noise abatement and improve air quality. He has published over 100 academic papers/book chapters on landscape plants and urban green spaces.
