Holocaust Memorial Day: The Story and Fragility of Freedom

Tue 23 January 2024 , 11am-3pm

Millennium Gallery

Join us to mark Holocaust Memorial Day with an afternoon of talks, film screenings, stalls and creative activities at the Millennium Gallery.

You will learn about the history of Holocaust from academic historians and community members with lived experience, as we come together with compassion and peace to mark this annual day of memorial.

There will be a pop-up exhibition “We Are Not Alone”: Legacies of Eugenics, which explores the impact of eugenics. It reveals how eugenics has influenced programmes of human betterment in different national and international contexts since the 1880s.

Throughout the day, there will also be stalls, activities and short documentaries exploring the history and aftermath of the Holocaust and genocide.

At 1pm, there will be a panel conversation between Professor Philip Spencer, Terezia Rostas and Professor Marius Turda – please book for that in advance here.

Holocaust Memorial Day remembers the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups and during more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

We recommend pre-booking your ticket for the 1pm talk here, but the exhibitions, film screenings and activities are free and available to drop into beforehand and afterwards between 11am and 3pm.

This event is organised in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University Multifaith Chaplaincy and Terezia Rostas, Roma Cultural Consultant and Director of Care for Young People's Future.
