Lunchtime Talk: Monica Maurice - A Remarkable Woman

Wed 6 March 2024 , 1pm-1:45pm

Kelham Island Museum

Discover the fascinating life of Monica Maurice, her engineering background and her career in Wolf Safety Lamp Company.

Monica Maurice (1908 – 1995) was Managing Director and Chairman of Wolf Safety Lamp Company from 1932 until she retired in 1992. Known affectionately as the “Lady of the Lamp”, she was also the first (and for 40 years, the only) woman member of the Association of Mining Electrical Engineers. She was also passionate about planes, cars and horse-riding and became a qualified pilot in 1935.

Join Eileen Hyland, Chair of Friends of Rotherham Chapel on the Bridge for a fascinating insight into Monica’s life and achievements. Eileen was inspired to research Monica’s life and work when she discovered that the formidable woman engineer was married in the chapel in 1938 – in a fashionable red silk gauze red dress that is now held in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

As well as hearing about Monica herself, you’ll also see a selection of objects from the Sheffield’s museum collection relating to Wolf Safety Lamps.
