Lunchtime Talk: Archaeological Excavation at Scotland Street – An Unexpected and Remarkable Discovery

Wed 3 June 2026 , 1pm-1:45pm

Weston Park Museum

Join York Archaeology to hear about the surprising results of archaeological work conducted at 85 Scotland Street.

The archaeological work at Scotland Street began as a straightforward investigation of the development of 18th century domestic housing in the Crofts to 19th century steelworks. During York Archaeology’s investigations, archaeologists were amazed to discover a large quantity of bronze age pottery sealed beneath the 19th century steelworks.

In this lunchtime talk, you’ll find out how this unexpected find shifted the archaeological investigation, leading to the recovery and analysis of one of the largest assemblages of prehistoric pottery found within the city.
