Join us at Weston Park Museum for a free, family-friendly celebration of Green Connections – a new display and project exploring the connections between nature, creativity and wellbeing.
On the day you’ll be able to get stuck into a host of creative activities and hands-on discoveries. Enjoy nature-inspired creative storytelling with renowned storyteller Carmel Page and listen to her interactive tales of wild weather, working on allotments and caring for the natural world.
Get up close to fascinating objects from the museum collections, including fossils, shells and taxidermy, or have a go at nature monoprinting and reveal the complex patterns and textures in leaves and foliage using ink to create a beautiful artwork.
You’ll also have the chance to explore the world of poster making, using collage and drawing to share your message – maybe that will be a fact sheet about wildlife close to home, a welcome sign for a bug hotel in a community garden, or an information poster all about ladybirds for your local library?
And of course, don’t miss the latest display in the museum’s What on Earth! gallery, produced by community participants from the S9 area as part of our Green Connections project, developed together to look at nature on our doorsteps and the changing environment around us. The event will also mark the launch of a walking and bus trail route from Darnall to Weston Park Museum devised by the group, taking in green spaces along the way and encouraging everyone to get out in their local nature spaces!
Green Connections is a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund to engage communities in Darnall with natural science collections to improve wellbeing, explore the environmental crisis and develop the museum service’s community led approach to participatory practice. Through this project and supported by Darnall Well Being, the S9 Green Connections Nature group have been exploring and enjoying the natural environment and heritage in their area, learning more about plants and animals, and connecting with each other, their local green spaces, their museums, and the natural science collections in particular.
