Off the Shelf: Upon a White Horse: Journeys in Ancient Britain and Ireland - Peter Ross

Sat 18 October 2025 , 2pm-3pm

Millennium Gallery

Beautiful and mysterious, ancient monuments have long provoked our awe and curiosity. Who created the Uffington White Horse and why? What was it like to live by Hadrian’s Wall? What stories would the megaliths of Stonehenge and Avebury tell if they could speak?

Combining historical research, personal stories and archaeological insights, Peter Ross celebrates their influence on art, culture and society, and explores how their meaning has evolved over time. He is the best-selling author of Steeple Chasing and A Tomb With A View.

This event is part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words from the University of Sheffield. The full festival programme is available here: https://offtheshelf.org.uk/events/

The event is organised by the Off the Shelf Festival. Views expressed at this event do not reflect those of Sheffield Museums.
