Off the Shelf: Josephine Baker’s Secret War - Hanna Diamond

Sun 19 October 2025 , 3pm-4pm

Millennium Gallery

Before WWII, Josephine Baker was one of the most famous performers in the world making her name dancing on the Parisian stage.

When war broke out, she turned spy for the French Secret Services. Drawing on previously unseen material and extensive research, this groundbreaking account is the first to reveal the vital role Baker played, from counterintelligence work for the Allied landings in North Africa to serving in the French Air Force in 1944–45. Hanna Diamond is Professor of French History at Cardiff University.

This event is part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words from the University of Sheffield. The full festival programme is available here: https://offtheshelf.org.uk/events/
