Tomasko’s exhibition presents a new series of artworks responding to paintings and sculpture that are in, or are on loan to, Sheffield’s Visual Art collection. Hear from Tomasko about the process of selecting the portraits (including work by Frank Auerbach, Pierre Bonnard, Kees Van Dongen and Eduardo Paolozzi) and the creation of her new works.
The conversation will be led by Omar Kholeif, Professor of Global Art Theory and Practice. Their previous roles include Manilow Senior Curator and Director of Global Initiatives at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Curator at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, Senior Curator at Cornerhouse, Manchester, and Director of Collections and Senior Curator at the Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE. They are also a distinguished visiting research professor at the MIMA Research Unit, Teesside University, as well as founding director of the not-for-profit cultural agency, artPost21, and series editor of the book anthology, imagine/otherwise published by Sternberg and the MIT Press on female worlding. Their latest book in this corpus narrates a hybrid memoir-biography cleaving their own life to that of the Lebanese-French-American painter, Huguette Caland. It is a journey that unfolds across a span of 18 years. They recently included Liliane Tomasko's art in their widely acclaimed group exhibition, "Finding My Blue Sky".
This event is part of the programme of events complementing Liliane Tomasko: The Psyche of the Portrait exhibition at the Millennium Gallery until 12 October 2025.
