Graves Gallery Tour: J G Graves and his Gallery

Thu 16 April 2026 , 2pm-2:45pm

Graves Gallery

Enjoy a guided tour of the Graves Gallery and find out about the man whose generosity founded it.

In 1929, John George Graves gave £30,000 to support the construction of a new library, with one condition – that an art gallery would be built on the top floor. As well as supporting the gallery that went on to take his name, Graves was an avid art collector and also gifted 700 works to the city’s collection.

Join us at the Graves Gallery and find out about more about life, work and collection of JG Graves. You’ll hear about the history of the gallery and look more closely at some of the works from his original collection that are still on display today.

Everything we do is made possible by you – please donate £5 to help us showcase homegrown creativity and ensure that everyone can enjoy the best in art and design here, on their doorstep.
