As we mark the 150th anniversary of Weston Park Museum, this new exhibition curated by Heavy Water Collective (artists Maud Haya-Baviera, Victoria Lucas and Joanna Whittle) will reflect on the collections that Sheffield’s museums are founded upon.
Pride and Joy will explore how the city’s collections began, revealing their eclectic breadth and celebrating the stories and people they represent. The exhibition will bring together objects and archives from across Sheffield’s collections and sites.
Inquisitive, surprising and full of spectacle, the exhibition will make engaging new connections, fostering pride and joy in the city’s shared heritage and stories.
Working with a team of co-curators with lived experience of South Asian heritage, this display will tell stories of people living in Sheffield today and ask what should be collected to represent Sheffield and its people.
It will be a vibrant reflection of what is valued and representative of Sheffield’s communities today, including donations, loans and new acquisitions, which will go on display alongside items from the existing collections.
This new display in the What on Earth gallery will explore the history of the museum, revealing the stories behind the collections, their origins and how they came to Sheffield.
It will offer visitors an insight into the role and motivations of the founding collectors and key protagonists who were instrumental in the formation of the museum. The display will include a focus on ornithologist, traveller and collector Henry Seebohm (1832-1895), considered one of Britain's greatest ornithologists.
