In spring 2024, Kelham Island Museum debuts three refreshed displays offering a fuller picture of Sheffield’s working history. These new additions, bringing new stories and perspectives, have been generously supported by the DCMS/Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund.

Visitors will learn more about manufacturing in the city for export and international trade. Giving a wider global context to the Sheffield-made objects and tools, these displays will be informed by research exploring the links between Sheffield tool manufacturing and the trade of enslaved people.

The new displays also update the museum’s stories of women’s contribution to industry. New objects and stories reflect women’s continuing role in the city’s industrial development throughout the latter half of the 20th century and provide opportunities for people to share their own experiences.

Further additions will bring more human perspectives to the city’s steelmaking story, better reflecting the diverse workforce behind the industry for which the city is best known.

The updates to the displays will take place from Tuesday 6 February and continue into early March. During this time, areas on the ground will be partially closed.
