Lunchtime Talk: A Victorian Christmas

Thu 28 November 2024 , 1pm-1:45pm

Weston Park Museum

Join local historian Janet Ridler as she talks about the rich history of Christmas and other midwinter festivals.

In this talk, Janet will explore the evolution of Christmas traditions, from the festive decorations we know today, like Christmas trees and turkey, to the cheerful practices of sending cards, pulling crackers, and singing carols. Discover how many of these customs were shaped during the Victorian era, a period that played a big role in defining what we think of as Christmas today.

This will be a fascinating look at traditional Christmas customs whether you’re a history enthusiast or looking to get in the festive spirit.

Our Victorian festivities continue later that week with the Kelham Island Museum Victorian Christmas Market. Join us on Sat 30 Nov and Sun 1 Dec for music and merriment from local brass bands, musicians, dancers, choirs and carollers, a feast of food and over 80 stalls selling Sheffield-made wares, gifts and seasonal goods.
