Collection Day: Seeking African Caribbean Stories

Sat 7 October 2023 , 11am-2pm

Weston Park Museum

Join us for this relaxed, drop-in session and help shape new displays telling the stories of people of African-Caribbean heritage living in Sheffield.

We’re currently working with a group of African-Caribbean co-curators living in the city to develop a major new display which will open at Weston Park Museum next year. The exhibition will tell inspiring stories of journeys, culture and heritage, celebrating the contributions of African-Caribbean people to Sheffield life.

We'd love it if you’d join us for a cuppa and chat with the curator team and to share your stories - we’re also looking for objects to help tell your story, so feel free to bring along pics or smaller items. Our co-curators have come up with a few ideas to inspire you, but it would be great to hear more:

  • Journeys from the Caribbean to Sheffield – what came in the suitcase?
  • Did you have a ‘special front room’ and a big glass fish?
  • Working in the steel and metal industry, NHS, bus, trams, the military and more
  • The West Indian Community Association and SADACCA
  • Crookesmoor, the Hub and other youth clubs
  • Fighting against discrimination
  • Cricket, football, dominos and other sports
  • Fashion and getting your hair done
  • Anyone remember Franks record shop? Did you follow the sound?
  • Did you go to dances in the Cutlers Hall?
  • How important is church to you – did you sing in choir?
  • Caribbean Cultural fortnight and carnival in Sheffield

Your contributions will help the museums better represent the experiences of people in Sheffield whose heritage is from diverse Caribbean Islands.
